Gljufura

Gljufura is a small intimate river in the prolific Borgarfjordur region, only an hour and a halfs drive from Reykjavík. It has a funny origin. The river Langa and Gljufura are one and the same as they start their journey from the highland lake Langavatn. Soon most of the flow is on a straight east run when suddenly and for no apparent reason, most of the flow takes a sharp southward turn and continues on as Langa, while perhaps a fourth of the water scuttles on, meandering through highland glens until the river drops into a canyon over an unpassable falls, Klaufhamarsfoss.

Gljufura continues, first east and then south, switching from canyons to flat stretches with cut bank pools before it finally empties into Norðurá, just above the junction pool Straumar. Gljufura has a good stock of grilse but sometimes long draughts pull the water level down and slows down the fishing. But It always rains eventually so Gljufura always weighs in with its respectable tally. But sometimes a major part of the fishing is done in the late autumn weeks. Worming is allowed on the river and some pools seem to be designed for it. Others are classic fly water.

Gljufura has an excellent self catering lodge and is fished with three daily rods. Its surroundings are charming and at some points dramatic. Gljufura had its best total for quite some years in 2008 as a 315 fish total was established. That is up by 40 to 50 fish compared to 2007 which was a pretty good season as well. Last year it did even better with a total of 323 fish landed.
