Laxa in Dolum

Laxa in Dolum is one of our newest additions and it ranks easily as one of Iceland’s best salmon rivers. It is a west coast river of moderate volume. It is mere two hour drive from Reykjavík, and five minutes west of the village Budardalur. It is a six rod river and one of the very few top Icelandic rivers left where bait fishing is still allowed alongside fly fishing for substantial periods of the season.

Laxa originates in the lake Laxarvatn and the salmon ascend to the Solheimafoss which is 25 kilometers from the estuary. Laxa ranges from the tricky technical side during draughts and low water to the almost ridiculous when some long awaited rain pumps up the volume and the fish take off. During the prime days, according to the conditions, some of the fishing is amazing to say the least. So amazing actually that it has prompted the setting of a ten salmon quota, five per shift. And when the fishing is at its amazing levels, anglers are easily landing ten per day, even more. Most of the river is easy to access and fish so it is a great favorite.

Laxa in Dolum is one of the relatively few rivers left on the west coast that gives anglers a real possibility of catching a very big fish, with 20 pounders being landed during most seasons. However the catch is propped up by big grilse runs. To give an idea of the excellence of Laxa in Dolum, the average catch over the last five years has been 1.540 salmon on the six daily rods. In 2009 1.430 were landed while in 2008 the final total was 1.899 salmon.
